Photo of a beautiful gate

Whatever one may say, but the point of entry into the yard at the design stage for many turns into a «headache» …

It’s easier if you decide to copy the option from your friends and you are only interested in the functional part of the question.

It’s a completely different matter when the design is tied to your own vision of the exterior of the yard (more specifically, the fence and the facade of the house) and then you have to make independent calculations of the strength of the frame, the mass of the wings and, based on this, select fittings.

Entrance gates are of two types: retractable (sliding) and swing. The first is described in detail in the article of the same name.

Let’s take a closer look at the second. As they say, simple designs are the most reliable. This is an axiom arising from centuries of experience. Yes, swing gates are more traditional and eat up a certain part of the territory. In snowy winters, you must first clear the place in front of them before opening the doors (this problem is solved by arranging heating).

But they do not have complex elements that can suddenly fail and they function under any circumstances.

The inconvenience associated with the alternate opening of the leaves can be solved by installing automation on the gate. Then, controlled from the remote control, both halves will swing open simultaneously.

The standard gate width is 4 m. But in most cases, for a private courtyard, they stop at 3.5 m, relying on passenger vehicles. The height of the gate posts should exceed the height of the fence by 20 centimeters. If a visor is planned above the gate, then it is raised by at least 2.5 m.

The most crucial moment is the adjustment of the sashes to the width of the passage and the correct choice of hinges.

ATTENTION! Experienced craftsmen recommend performing the sashes in turn: first make and hang one, then the second. This is quite reasonable, since simultaneous execution can misfire at the point of closure of the valves. The gap will be too large, insufficient or uneven (verified by personal experience). And in some cases, the conversion can be very difficult.

For light (up to 200 kg) sashes, simple hinged hinges are suitable, which are a cap mounted on a pin. This is a completely affordable option in every sense.

Modern bearing loops can withstand weights up to 4000 kg. Their system is thought out in such a way that it allows you to redistribute the weight more evenly and at the same time eliminates such a nuisance as skew.

Not only bulky gates made of metal or wood can suffer from skew. Even light openwork sashes made of a picket fence or imitating forging and mounted on simple hinges tend to “leave” down the center. This is especially true for sashes, where the width is greater than the height.

Someone in this case uses the “heel” (a stand in the center, on which both halves rest at the same time).

It is more aesthetically pleasing and convenient to put the edge of the sash on the wheel, taking care of the horizontality of the coating on which it will roll.

Better yet, replace the hinges 🙂

GATE DESIGN PHOTO

Openwork forging can delight the most strict connoisseur of beauty. But it is transparent, and this is not always convenient for the inhabitants of not very large areas. A polycarbonate sheet will eliminate this inconvenience. retaining the exquisite design of forged gates.

Another option to avoid excessive transparency is to make something like stained glass inserts from iron. The result looks unusual and impressive.

Another version of the design in the same style.

And how do you like this masterpiece from Malahitova Street (I don’t know which city)?

For admirers of strict design, iron gates with overlays of forged elements (or their imitations) are more suitable.

The inhabitants of the forest areas subconsciously gravitate towards natural materials in the design of the yard. Therefore, preference is given to wood, but in a respectable frame made of stone and metal.

But Europeans have recently preferred lightness: low hedges and gates to match them. There are two reasons for this decision: mentality and purely economic (the higher the fence, the greater the tax on it 🙂

Well, we are used to living behind high fences. And the worse the criminogenic situation in the village, the higher our fences.

Metal gates like those in the top photo are replicated quite massively and are sold in construction hypermarkets. In addition to such dignity as accessibility, they have a weak point — unimportant loops and a small height. Loops can be cut and welded on new ones. And the craftsmen add the extra 20-25 cm by building up a strip of metal from below.

A similar option, but already ennobled by coloring with an additional tone and duplicated with a tinted board.

Molded polycarbonate is more suitable for duplicating gates, because dust will accumulate in the honeycomb.

But on top of the wooden sashes, you can apply an application of forged openwork.

These wooden gates are the work of an experienced craftsman. And in order to extend their service as long as possible, the owners quite reasonably provided for a protective visor.

The ranch-style wooden gates are hinged. And the sashes are executed so masterfully that there is not the slightest hint of their distortion.

Gates in the Old Slavonic style made of wood with forged overlays are ideal for both a house made of timber and modern plastered buildings.

Wooden gate from the inside. By the way, the gate is cut into one of the leaves, which significantly minimizes the cost of creating an entrance area. Diagonal stops from a bar are an indispensable element that will prevent the sashes from skewing.

Another wooden gate, view from the yard. The hinges are articulated, all forged fittings are obviously made to order.

In these small gates, the successful combination of the horizontal direction of the fence boards and the vertical picket fence on the gate leaves is noteworthy.

In order to preserve the light color of the pine for a long time, it is treated with a composition with UV protection, and then varnished. by the way, UV protection can be part of specialized paints for wood.

Simple. but a harmonious combination of a forged frame and a plank leaf of the gate leaves.

A frame from a metal corner can be sewn up with anything: corrugated board, polycarbonate, board. It is convenient to attach hinges, automation and handles to it. By the way, the handles in the photo above are distinguished by a comfortable shape.

An electric jigsaw, a grinder and several forged elements are the secret of the originality of these gate leaves. An iron strip along the top edge of the gate protects the vulnerable end part of the boards from excess moisture.

Looks like a designer. who designed this gate decided to add a few warm notes to the black forged lace. The honey color of the wood (or maybe the painted metal) brightened up the cool color scheme of the courtyard.

And these inserts are definitely made of wood …

Something similar, only in a much larger size, can be found in medieval castles. Serious design for a respectable farmstead.

A light gate at the entrance to a small courtyard somewhere in England. Moreover, the gates are retractable, and the gate is swinging.

So that everyone lives like this … The gate is the entrance to a private road. Equipped with automation, small in size and purely symbolic — the size of these possessions in a hilly area seems to be so impressive that the fence is money thrown to the wind.

My favorite photo: I know what wood is and its properties. That is why I admire this model of the gate, probably made of oak and tinted like rosewood.

Another design in light oak in Provence style. Actually, the frame is made of metal, but its filling is made of wood plus coquettish forged copper overlays. If you look closely, there is an automatic mechanism opening the doors at the bottom.

Gate design in the style of Old Italy. It is difficult to even imagine how a car can enter here. Rather, no way. The curb at the entrance indicates a purely pedestrian destination. Then, it turns out, this is a large gate or even the entrance to a large wine cellar 🙂

Sliding gates in ranch style. The simple decision to clamp the crossbars between the double struts paid off quite well. The frame is tough and durable.

This decision of the entrance part is made with Japanese notes. The gate posts are stone (or maybe concrete), but sheathed with boards. All other parts are intact. And most importantly, the fence is made of evergreen arborvitae. Such a homestead will not go unnoticed at any time of the year.

Glass inserts in the gate leaves are unusual and impractical, but interesting.

And finally, a selection of masterpieces of forging and artistic thought: metal gates.

The urban plot, transferred to the plane of the gate, made them a local landmark. On the one hand, it is beautiful and original, on the other hand, there is increased attention to the estate, which is not always appropriate.

Landscape motifs of forging on the background of a wooden board framed by stone pillars — a brutal design for a territory in the forest. And in the city — all the same increased attention to the site. Whatever it is, it’s beautiful…

The openwork fabric of these gates is duplicated with polycarbonate and shaded with golden patina.

Beautiful plant motifs from forging will not leave anyone indifferent…

The chip of these gates is an asymmetric pattern, the center of which is a supporting pillar.

Chasing on the door leaf will not leave the passer-by indifferent…

Masterfully thought-out design and professional painting (placed tinted accents) have done their job: this gate is simply luxurious.

What else to read on the site:

DIY wooden fence

Fences made of wood are considered the most short-lived. After all, not everyone knows (or does not want to know) the secrets of wood and its processing. Neoa processed pine fence will indeed last no more than 10 years, and even then, provided that the lower part of the pillar is waterproofed.

Arbor with barbecue, design

Barbecue or brazier made of bricks are simplified stove structures, often fastened with clay mortar, which is afraid of getting wet. But even buildings made on the basis of heat-resistant cement still need protection from rain. At least that’s why…

«Roof» for «iron horse»

Modern way of life is hard to imagine without a car. And if for a resident of a metropolis a personal vehicle is to some extent an element of luxury (in terms of wasting time in traffic jams), then for a small city with a private sector and even more so the village is …
