Asklepias — confectionery in the garden

[ad_1]

Do you want your site to be fragrant with the aromas of chocolate cake? Settle in it a Syrian vatnik (aka Asklepias).
Like every garden plant, it has its pros and cons, but there are many more of the first.
Drought-resistant, tall, beautiful, fragrant honey plant.
Of the shortcomings — the ability to become a weed. however, many garden flowers «suffer» from this disease.
However, the cottonwort is not often seen in the ornamental garden.

In order not to be unfounded, I will only mention that the motherland of the quilt is America, and he absolutely independently settled with us in the Chernihiv region — not otherwise, a fair wind skidded 🙂
A fluffy parachute of white fibers is attached to each seed, all of them are tightly packed in the seed box, resembling cotton wool (and therefore the cotton wool).

I met Asklepias as soon as I came to live at the dacha. In the vicinity, he chose abandoned fields and roadsides. It was simply impossible to miss such a noticeable, sweet-smelling flower. But the strong aroma also caused alarm: what if it causes a headache and this plant should not be planted near the house? The most difficult thing was to find out the name, however, who is looking for …
In general, the milkwort has long been used in landscape design, however, gardeners prefer less aggressive varieties of tuberose and meat red, while Syrian is more revered by beekeepers. In this industry, this type is considered one of the promising areas, promising a «harvest» of honey up to 600 kg per hectare. The task is facilitated by the fact that the milkweed grows rapidly and lives in one place without a transplant for up to 10-15 years.
About 80 species of asclepias are known, but in our climate, only three are most common among gardeners. I present them.

Syrian squid (Asclepias syriaca)
- Habitat: North America.
- Flowering period: July.
- Heightsa: up to 1.5 m.
- Color spectrum: pink.
- Growing conditions: acidic loams, sun and slight shade.
- Peculiarities: frost-resistant perennial, medicinal plant, excellent honey plant, aggressive towards neighbors, has a strong aroma of chocolate cake.

tuberose tuberose (Asclepias tuberosa)
- Habitat: North America.
- Flowering period: July — October.
- Height: 60-70 cm.
- Color spectrum: orange, red, yellow.
- Growing conditions: does not like shading, winters badly, requires shelter, in cold areas it is grown as an annual through seedlings.
- Peculiarities: perennial at home, winters badly in our country, non-aggressive towards neighbors, loved by gardeners for long flowering.

The meat-red venom, incarnate (Asclepias incarnata)
- Habitat: North America.
- Flowering period: July August.
- Height: up to 1 m.
- Color spectrum: purple, red, white.
- Growing conditions: tolerates partial shade, does not tolerate drought.
- Peculiarities: perennial, hibernates with shelter, non-aggressive, has a delicate pleasant aroma.
The high drought resistance of this flower is due to the fleshiness and length of the root — up to 5 meters. Think over the place for landing well, because to mechanically eradicate the overgrown thickets of the milkweed without supervision same way problematiclike hell — only chemistry.
Prevention of unwanted growth — limiting the growth area with a deep border and timely cutting of faded inflorescences.
And asklepias has poisonous juice that can cause skin irritation.

the best unpretentious plants for the herb garden will become neighbors for the quilt in the garden:
- echinacea is an excellent pair in terms of height and color scheme, she and asklepias are countrymen,
- monarda — exactly the same, but a contrasting option, especially since they were born on the same continent,
- miscanthus is an ideal frame for Asclepias Syrian and meat-red, it will hide wilted lower leaves,
- the peristoschetinnik will look better at some distance, so as not to get lost against the background of a flowering quilted jacket, but it will do an excellent job of creating contrast,
- reed grass, high bells, feather grass are planted in front of the foreground.
The best time for this procedure is spring or at the end of flowering (late summer — early autumn).
Vatochnik can be cuttings. In early summer, young shoots are cut into cuttings and rooted in wet sand. Rooting lasts twenty days, transplanting to a permanent place can be done in early autumn.

It is impossible to imagine how one can indifferently pass by the area where dishes are prepared on the grill. The fragrant smoke of the food being prepared, even if for a moment, will distract your mind from worldly worries and problems, forcing you to think about something more “monumental and eternal”…
