Buzulnik is a spectacular yellow giant.

Buzulnik (Ligularia) is rightfully considered one of the main plants that form the architecture of the garden.

It is simply impossible not to notice it: the height reaches human height, long inflorescences-candles burn with yellow light and are visible from afar.

Flowers have their own peculiarity, they consist of elongated petals-tongues located in a circle. It is for this form of ligularia (from lat. Ligula «uvula»)and got its name. The flowers themselves may be inconspicuous, but there are many of them and they look like candles, and the larger ones form small inflorescences. So the flowering of the buzulnik in any case looks extremely decorative.

And even without flowers, the buzulnik is good, because it forms a sprawling curtain of large leaves. And the leaves of the ligularia are conspicuous: rounded, serrated, green, variegated, purple — it all depends on the species and variety. In diameter, some specimens reach 60 cm.

This luxurious grass grows in shady and damp places on loose soils rich in humus. You can plant a buzulnik in light loam, but in no case in the sun. For beautiful flowering, he needs partial shade and moderate moisture.

Otherwise, the buzulnik is a rather unpretentious plant that perfectly tolerates wintering without shelter.

And another great advantage of this giant is that it grows in one place without a transplant for up to 20 years. Just like hosta and fern it is an ideal plant for a «lazy» garden.

As I already mentioned, ligularia, being a large herbaceous perennial, serves as one of the basic elements of garden architecture. Agree, the size is impressive …

Buzulnik in the garden can grow as a tapeworm, forming a large rosette over the years without a transplant.

In a mixborder, this garden giant is always its center.

Well, in a mixed planting of ligularia, as well as rudbeckia forms a large array, competing in size with shrubs.

Given the large size and sprawling shape of the curtain, blooming buzulnik partners should be selected carefully so that they do not get lost next to it. It is better if it is decorative deciduous herbs and shrubs.

In the absence of flowering, against the background of luxurious foliage, daylilies, evening primrose, and some types of lilies that can bloom in partial shade look great.

Varieties of low-growing buzulnik with purple foliage and large inflorescences-baskets are perfectly combined with plants such as hosta, woolly chistets, felt sapling, geyhera, brunner, etc.

Buzulnik is propagated by seeds and division of the bush.

Seeds need stratification, because they are sown in open ground before winter. The disadvantage of this method is the risk of non-preservation of varietal characteristics.

Seedlings are transplanted to a permanent place in the fall. Seedlings will bloom for 3-4 years.

To get flowering in the year of transplantation and preserve all the characteristics of the variety, it is better to use the division method. The rhizome is divided in the spring, planting the delenka in enriched soil (clay: peat: compost: sand = ½: 1: 1: ½).

The best time to transplant a buzulnik is mid-spring (when the plant wakes up) and autumn during the wilting period.

If there is a need to transplant ligularia in the summer, you need to cut off the aerial part so that the root system takes root better.
