Choose trees to plant on the site along the fence? Overview — Views + Video

What trees to plant on the site along the fence? Even an expensive and new stone fence will look gray and dull, and if you use a grid to create a fence, you will constantly be under the gun of someone’s views.
But in both the first and second cases, you can decorate the fence if you plant trees along it, and you can do it both outside and inside. The main thing is to know which trees to plant along the fence.
Landscaping rules
There are a few important rules to keep in mind when planting trees along a fence:
- Trees and shrubs should be planted at a distance from the fence at which the roots will not damage the foundation of the fence. As a rule, for shrubs, this value varies from 1 to 1.5 meters, and for trees, all 3-5.
- Consider the size of the plant.
- Take note of the shading that will be created when planting trees along the fence.
Plants should not be planted too close to each other, correlate the location with the size of the suburban area.
Popular types of trees
It will not be news to anyone that many fellow countrymen have fruit trees (cherries, apple trees) along the fence, although many other types of ornamental trees can be used for this purpose:
Maple with unusual, variegated foliage (Tatar or riverine).
- Linden.
- Chestnut.
- Buckthorn.
- Tree hydrangea.
- Dwarf birches.
- Aronia.
- Willows (purple, Russian ash, basket, convoluted, rosemary, Caspian, etc.).
- Coniferous species (dwarf pines, ornamental spruce, thuja).
If you wish, you can increase the height of a blank fence if you plant trees nearby. When the crowns begin to close, the trees can be cut, but this process is laborious.
Note, Linden and Elm (from hardwoods) lend themselves best to shearing.
What is a fence for?
When choosing which trees to plant near the fence, you should ask yourself: “Why do I need this?”. From this data, you can build on and make a choice.
- If you need trees as fencing posts, then slender trees would be ideal, which include mountain ash, straight birch, aspen, poplar and linden.
- If you want to decorate the area around the house with decorative views, you can safely buy willow, acacia or chestnut.
- If trees are needed as an additional disguise from overly inquisitive neighbors, then conifers, especially spruce, would be ideal. They are wonderfully combined with mesh and wrought iron fences. In addition, coniferous trees perfectly save from dust.
- Practical owners probably want to combine everything useful and plant cherries, apples, pears and plums as a disguise + an additional source of harvest.
How trees affect the overall landscape
If you look at various photos, you will understand which trees are planted along the fence. Thanks to beautiful crowns, you can completely transform the site, and with the help of fir, linden and mountain ash, as well as cherries and chestnuts, you can mask the dullness of a heavy concrete or brick fence.
If you are a happy owner of a beautiful forged or lattice gate, then conifers are best suited. Over time, beautiful spruce legs will stick out between the bars of the fence, and this will deprive your fence of straightness and monotony, and make it mysterious. To make the effect even better, plant fir or small exotic trees behind (but not as often as the main row).
If you have a classic picket fence, choose fruit trees, and the apples that will fall on the lawn will be the envy of anyone passing by. If the trees are from the «face» of the fence, then they are needed in order to hide everything that happens in the yard from passers-by. An effective solution will be when planting dwarf trees, for example, birch, spruce, pine, chestnut and their timely haircut.
Is a hedge an option?
You can often see a hedge in the dacha of many people, which plays the role of a decorative element, visually divides the space, restricts access and covers the necessary areas.
In this case, pay special attention to the spruce from which the fences were previously made. To do this, small trees were planted at a distance of 20-25 cm from each other and cut regularly so that the required level of height and width could be maintained. This is a favorite way of fencing off Russian landowners in the past.
You can also plant trees along the fence, which are listed below:
- Hawthorn — this species of trees is small, but sometimes tall shrubs are found. The leaves are shiny, beautifully shaped, dark green, and the branches have thorns. The fruits from the tree can be used for healing.
- Hornbeam by itself it grows very slowly, but it is very resistant to diseases and pests. The crown is dark green, shiny, and in autumn becomes a beautiful bright yellow.
- small-leaved elm have the same leaf shape as the hornbeam, but grows much faster, is undemanding to the soil and survives drought well. Ideal if you have a high fence.
- Thuja (western) «Brabant» very valuable, as it is a frost-resistant species. The tree creates a dense and high wall of greenery that needs to be trimmed twice a year. Care is simple, and anyone can handle it.
- Thuja (western) «Smaragd» It has a narrow cone-shaped crown and can reach a height of up to 6 meters. This variety is also frost-resistant and can withstand any wind, and also does not require unusual care.
- Thuja (western) «Holmstrap» can form dense walls up to 2.5 meters high. But this variety will grow slowly and reach your desired height in about 10 years.
Results
Today it has become fashionable to create interesting compositions that consist of decorative coniferous species with small interspersed with deciduous and flowering trees, which can also be planted along the fence.
Helpful advice! When planting trees in a few rows in the background, place tall varieties, namely columnar arborvitae, yews, dwarf pines, cypresses. In the foreground, leave a stunted juniper, dwarf thuja, Christmas trees. Between them, you can place a willow with a weeping crown or a birch.
Palmette is considered an interesting solution, which is not so easy to create, but on the sunny side of the site you can create a spectacular living fence. You can make palmette from pear, apple or rowan.
