In the field of design, there are no frames and restrictions: all ideas have the “right to life”, but only a few take root in our interiors and gardens.

Why is that? Probably, it’s not just about creativity and beauty.

Each of us, alas, quickly “gets tired” of vivid emotions and in his personal space wants to see something unobtrusive, pleasing to the eye and giving a sense of peace.

The garden, as a space for relaxation, is no exception.

After browsing through hundreds of sites and thousands of landscape photographs, I came up with the formula for an ideal garden for myself:

“tiered + many shrubs + competent haircut”

Before this formula, long before me, the ingenious gardeners of the past came up with topiaries and karikomi.

WHAT IT IS?

If only a beginner has not heard about topiaria, then professionals know about karikomi.

Karikomi is a type of phytoplasty (decorative pruning of trees and shrubs), which came to us from the Land of the Rising Sun.

What is the difference between topiary and karikomi, I will show clearly …

Topiary — it is always a «figure» (cube, ball, spiral, a set of geometric elements or a figurine of a living being).

Karikomi — this is an abstraction, something incomprehensible, streamlined, flowing from one to another. Something like a cloud or a wave.

By the way, the name of the style comes from the word «clouds».

If, for example, an array of boxwoods is planted in a rectangle and cut in the shape of a parallelepiped, we get bosquet.

If the same boxwood is planted in an array in the form of a meander and cut like a hill of arbitrary shape, we get karikomi.

Both of these techniques give the gardener amazing opportunities for designing a garden space. The degree of complexity both in design and in subsequent maintenance, everyone chooses for himself…

SUBTLETS OF WORK WITH SHRUBS

To begin with, a lot of plants will be required and most of them can be propagated independently by cuttings or grafting. This will significantly save the budget, although it will slightly delay the “ripening” of the landscape.

All plants that you plan to shape with a haircut should grow in a well-lit area.

In ornamental gardening, no shrub grows by itself. How the plant will look in the future is usually decided in the first two years of the seedling’s life.

To work in topiary technique or karikomi, you need to have a highly branched bush. To do this, the trunk is cut «to the stump» and the next year it gives three to five shoots, which will then branch under the influence of annual pruning.

Slow-growing varieties of trees and shrubs are usually grown in shkolka until they reach the starting height and volume, maintaining the planned shape.

Everything that develops more or less quickly is planted in a permanent place at the age of 2-3 years and immediately begins to form.
