Cypress — both in the house and in the garden

Lawson's cypress

Do you want to grow a low coniferous tree at home, exuding a unique aroma when touched? Or maybe you are looking for a low ephedra to give? Be sure to get acquainted with cypress trees.

In our area, this plant appeared not so long ago, a little over a dozen years, but many gardeners liked it. The statement about the impossibility of growing close relatives of cypress in the middle lane is not entirely true.

These evergreen trees love moist air, do not tolerate drought and stagnant water. And it is quite possible to recreate such conditions in certain parts of the garden in regions where air humidity does not fall below 60%. The main thing is to choose the right landing site.

Cypresses love “evening bathing” more than any other conifers, like arborvitae, they just need it. They also like moisture in the soil, but without stagnant water.

Cypress Boulevard

The most beautiful of them are the pea-bearing Boulevard and the Nutkan Glauca. Completely different, but very unusual.

Soils for cypress choose moisture-intensive (clay) and acidic. The lack of an acidic environment can be compensated by adding high-moor peat to the soil when planting. They also mulch the trunk circle.

Lawson Cypress Blue Moon

cypress Lawson (Camaecyparis lawsoniana)

  • Growth area: North America
  • Color spectrum: emerald, silver, lemon yellow shades of needles, depending on the variety.
  • Height: in the climate of Ukraine up to 10 m, depending on the variety.
  • Growing conditions: light, moist, acidic soils, a young plant is able to grow in the shade, an older plant needs more light. Frost resistance up to -25°С.
  • Peculiarities: evergreen coniferous perennial, the most capricious of those that can take root with us. In a frosty climate, gardeners successfully and without hassle grow in the form of a shrub with creeping branches, pinning them to the ground as they grow.

This species gave the greatest variety of varieties both in height and color of needles.

Cypress pea (Camaecyparis pasifera)

  • Growth area: Japan.
  • color gamma: in nature, the juicy green color of the needles, there are varieties in bluish and yellowish shades.
  • Height: in our climate no more than 2m.
  • Growing conditions: acidic fertile soil, humid climate or frequent sprinkling, sunny place.
  • Peculiarities: evergreen coniferous perennial, the most frost-resistant and hardy of all species, however, not for regions with a sharply continental climate. Afraid of winter and spring burning in the sun.

The variety of pea-bearing cypress Boulevard is not only the most beautiful, but also the most frost-resistant.

The height in our climatic conditions is about 1-2 meters per ten years, with a higher height this variety is prone to freezing. But with good care (pruning and shelter from winter burns) it is able to live longer.

cypress Nootkan (Chamaecyparis nootkatensis)

  • Growth area: North America.
  • Color spectrum: in nature it has a yellowish-green color, there are varieties with bright green, blue-green needles.
  • Height: we can grow up to 5-6 m.
  • Growing conditions: heavy moisture-absorbing soils, sunny, wind-protected place.
  • Peculiarities: evergreen coniferous perennial, found even in Alaska. Confidently wins the love of gardeners in the frost resistance zone 5a and above.
Cypress pendula

Unusually shaped cypress Pendula and Arrow Green are considered one of the most valuable varieties.

The crown is narrow, asymmetrical, the trunk needs support in the first 10 years. The top is drooping, giving the plant a gloomy look.

The tree itself brings unique notes of a fairy-tale forest to the garden.

Cypress trees should not be planted in wet places, in lowlands, near birches, in conditions of dry shade, strong gas pollution, blown terrain, as well as in calcareous soil.

The best place for landing is an illuminated area, closed from the cold north wind by a wall, a fence, a relief slope, and planting coniferous trees.

These conifers are also afraid of winter burns. Therefore, in the fall they are covered with agrofiber. But you can do without it, just be prepared that the top can burn and dry out. Then the plant itself will choose a new branch-guide and start growing again.

If your climate zone is not 6 or 7, then due to regular freezing, the cypress tree is unlikely to grow tall.

Low coniferous trees are favorites of summer residents and landscape designers. They fit perfectly in any corner of the garden. It is difficult to find places where a plant such as cypress cannot be used.

Cypress Boulevard

It is low, evergreen, ideally “posing” against the background of a lawn, decorative mulch, in a heather garden, in a mixborder, in a rockery and on an alpine hill, in a green flower garden and coniferous mix.

An ideal complement to low cypress trees will be ground cover junipers and decorative deciduous shrubs.

Arrays of cypress trees are best planted in such a way that they contain species of different shapes, and plants of the same variety differ greatly in age.

The exception is a hedge or planting like a colonnade.

In the coniferous garden there is a place for cypress trees on the southeastern edge. It is better to plant them against the background of contrasting needles in uniform colors. For example, Bulevar next to a blue spruce and a scaly juniper of the same color.

Bright color contrast is more justified for the corners of the garden, designed for viewing from afar. For example, against the backdrop of a fence, a mix of coniferous green, light green and silver shades is magnificent. It will simultaneously hide the fence behind it and draw the eye to its bright palette.

Cypress trees, like arborvitae, are easily propagated by cuttings. Not any part of the branch is harvested for cuttings, but the first side layer on it, provided that the place of attachment to the branch is already lignified, and the length is about 15 cm. Such a process is carefully torn off “with a heel”. Cuttings are harvested at the end of winter.

There are two ways to root cuttings.

Traditional: immerse the “heel” in wet sand to a depth of 1.5 cm, cover with a plastic bottle and put in a warm place, periodically maintaining humidity.

Non-traditional (did not try): wrap the “heel” with wet sphagnum moss and a wet cloth, put it in a plastic bag, tie it up and hang it on a warm window.

Transplantation of cypress trees is the same as for all conifers: in spring (preferably) or in autumn (optimal for summer residents). You can not immerse the root collar in the ground, the roots must be straightened, no trampling — only sprinkling and compacting the soil with watering. More here.

The ideal garden is a landscape that is easy to care for and beautiful in all seasons. That is why I personally consider a coniferous garden or a garden in the forest to be the best option for busy people (this is how lucky you are with the site). Judge for yourself: weeds are not terrible for trees and shrubs — young ones can be mulched …

“Use what is at hand and do not look for another.” This is the motto of Philias Fog from Around the World in 80 Days. When creating a garden on your site, you can safely be guided by this rule. In general, gardening is a waste-free process. Everything that has grown out of the earth will return to it.

There were times when curtains were simply tied to a wooden stick. Then the pole was transformed into a forged cornice, and the ties … They remembered the ties when they got tired of factory products and authenticity and romance returned to fashion again. Along with the well-forgotten…
