Herb garden — a difficult element of the landscape

[ad_1]

Such a kind of garden landscape as a herb garden has existed and developed since the 70s of the last century.

It was then that landscape gardens gradually began to come into fashion. Breeders paid attention to wild herbs and began to use them in landscape compositions.

The very concept of «herb garden» is interpreted in different ways. For some, this is a fragrant garden of spicy greens. For others, a landscape filled with ornamental grasses. Still others call meadow herbs so.

All three options have the right to life if the resulting picture pleases the eye of the garden visitor.

GARDEN OF SPICY HERBS

It should be noted that the creation of a herb garden is fundamentally different from others in the selection of plants and the conditions for their cultivation.

So, for example, spicy greens are especially good for planting along paths, around recreation areas or when decorating terraces.

Fragrant herbs are grown in free planting, in beds or in tubs. The same methods are used here as for flowering plants: weeding and top dressing.

Most spices are non-aggressive in relation to neighbors, therefore there is no need to use limiters in the ground. The exception is mint — it is planted in the frame of a lawn border and regularly removed in «unauthorized places».

Even drought-tolerant varieties need regular watering to keep their green color vibrant.

CEREAL GARDEN

Ornamental cereals are a special caste of plants. To begin with, they are absolutely unpretentious and are divided into two types: drought-resistant and marsh.

They are planted respectively in open areas or near the water. To the soil, cereals are undemanding, they do not need to be fertilized.

A feature is the poor tolerance of transplantation. Therefore, most cereals are grown from seeds at the planting site or through seedlings.

The first method involves timely and regular watering so that the soil on the site is always moistened, as in spring in a meadow. It is difficult to predict the germination of seeds in this case, but you can make sure: they create shading with geotextiles over the sowing.

In the second case, the plants are watered regularly only until they are completely rooted. But the chances of getting a positive result are more.

As for the design, the cereal garden is somewhat reminiscent of an engraving — the same thin drawing of lines. You can drop them randomly, just like in the wild. But the maximum beauty of the graceful and smooth curves of curtains can only be emphasized by a worthy background. It can be the velvet of a lawn, a scattering of stones, or the correct forms of cut shrubs.

FORB

blooming meadow — a landscape that delights during the period May-June-July. But after the flowers fade, the grass changes color from lush green to ocher. And only yarrow, eringium, tansy, mallow, and even a dozen dried flowers continue the holiday of summer …

On the one hand, forbs are the most unpretentious type of garden. On the other hand, at certain intervals it loses its decorative effect.

The way out of this situation is quite simple: among the meadow mixture, islands of cereals, long-flowering species (including annuals) and dried flowers are planted, limiting these areas with a border tape. When the general background loses its attractiveness, it is mowed, leaving these decorative islands to bloom.

But there is one «but». In order for the next year the herbs to bloom with renewed vigor, it is mowed only after the seeds have fallen. Otherwise, only greenery without flowers will remain in the meadow carpet.

It is not necessary to plant aggressive species in the meadow landing, for example, ryegrass. Unless you deliberately want to see a tall green carpet on your lawn without the presence of flowering letniki.

Be that as it may, but the most optimal herb garden is spicy herbs, flowering perennials and cereals planted in large arrays. This is how the beauty of discreet plants is maximally revealed.

It is especially important to alternate landings with grasses of different heights and be sure to include trees and shrubs in the landscape. These simple techniques will make the picture voluminous and unique.

A rationally organized herb garden can be safely categorized as «light garden«. However, it will be really unpretentious provided:

  • dense landing,
  • lack of abandoned or unkempt areas in the vicinity,
  • the absence of aggressor plants in the compositions.
